i can't really say about affordable, but the crime rate is one of the lowest in the nation. in the avenues and the downtown area and in the bench areas (foothill, sugarhouse, etc.) the crime rate is definitely pretty low.
i really like living there. it's a big city in that you feel like there's a lot going on, but you still can know everyone like you do in a small town. really cool underground music scene coming up, and a cool bike scene. if you venture a few blocks south of temple square (the mormon area of downtown) you can find lots of cool shops, bike stores, and music venues. also, it's really close to lots of great ski resorts in the winter, the liquor laws are becoming less intense, and salt lake city international airport is the western hub city for delta airlines, so there's lots of options as to travel (we have a nonstop flight to paris and we're getting a nonstop flight to tokyo). also, it's really not as conservative and republican as the rest of the state--salt lake city proper went to obama during the election, and as you will find in the salt lake tribune opinion pages, it's fairly liberal.
